origins

Lawrence and Saleena met while working at the CDC where they were tasked with curing international epidemics, including ebola and measles. Part fate and part frugality, the pair decided to become roommates on a whim. On the very first day, Saleena asked Lawrence if he knew how to make kombucha. He pointed to his jars fermenting on the counter and smiled. Over the next year they fell in love with brewing and with each other. Their chemistry is at the heart of every sip of this brew.

Saleena and Lawrence turned their Bushwick abode into a space for sound healings, meditation, and ecstatic dance. Their batch sizes have grown to provide nourishment to their community and BKE was born.

Over the last several years, they have both been responding to the COVID-19 pandemic. They are grateful to be on both the small business and clinical side of this journey - and know, when you buy a case of BKE, you are making two healthcare workers’ dreams come true.
